Science Tuition
$450 for the year/ $50 per month
Curiculum
Teacher: Mrs. Amber Basener
Curriculum: Apologia Science, Exploring Creation with Physics
2nd edition by Dr. Jay Wile
Prerequisite: Algebra II, recommended by Apologia
Course Description
REGULAR PHYSICS LEVEL OR
FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS
CHESSIE Physics offers two different high school physics classes during our class time. The regular physics class follows the book completely.
The other options is Foundations of Physics. In the foundations class, the students do less of the math problems and use their extra time to complete projects on the concepts being covered. The foundations class covers all the same material but uses writing, movie making, home experiments and the like to understand the concepts as well as mathematical computations.
Both classes are rigorous and count as high school physics credit. The level and prerequisite of math is the same for both classes. The main difference is the amount of math used. Students who understand and enjoy the language of mathematics will thrive in the regular class. Students who need more time to do math problems and enjoy showing their knowledge in more hands on ways will enjoy the foundations class.

The hands-on nature, varying experiments, and reading level , along with the depth of the material in the textbooks will vary according to grade level. This ensures that students will build upon their previous knowledge while digging deeper into the topic at hand. There is a report requirement once a semester that will go with a particular topic. There may be an exceptional video shown on the topic of study once a semester. Many STEM activities are incorporated into the science studies. Students are responsible to read and complete the weekly homework assignments from the textbook. Each week, classroom assistants check the student's homework as they arrive for class. If your child has any special needs or allergies that you would like the teacher to be aware of, please reach out. Course Description:
This life science course is a very busy hands-on lab science that prepares students well for high school biology. Students will learn about various life science concepts from the perspective of a Christian worldview. The BJUP Life Science textbook is written on a 7th grade level. In this course, students will complete about 2 hours of homework each week. Life Science is making observations and decisions about living things. Students will develop the skills necessary to make scientific observations of living things on their own. The course covers diffusion, pH, proteins, introduction to the microscope, human body studies including heart dissection, procedural information concerning hospital tests that are done on the heart while seeing cardiac catheterization equipment samples and viewing cardiac cath films. Animal behavior, fish respiration studies, crayfish, earthworm, and dogfish shark dissections, biotic and abiotic factors and how they interrelate in an ecosystem are some of the topics covered. Students will give one oral report each semester. They will learn the proper technique to write up a lab report. Students will observe, record, and analyze samples and data from the living world in order to make models, predictions, and graphs and also have opportunities to complete both a STEM activity & three inquiry-based labs.

Course Description
Astronomy is the study of objects and phenomena that occur outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Although astronomy is one of the oldest sciences (people have been looking at the stars since the beginning of time), our knowledge of the cosmos is growing by leaps and bounds with the aid of modern technology. In our class at CHESSIE we will cover the history and worldview assumptions of astronomy, focusing on the evidence for a creator. We cover some basics of astronomical observations such as the study of gravity and of telescopes. We then look outward from Earth, starting at the planets of our solar system, and on to the many stars of the Milky Way, next we tackle intergalactic space, other galaxies and cosmology (the study of the origin of the universe). To study these topics, we make use of Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and Math. Despite these overlaps with other classes, there are no prerequisites for CHESSIE Astronomy. These overlaps will either be a great review or a good introduction to them. Astronomy students should be prepared for weekly reading with both comprehension questions and math problems, occasional labs, and 3 evening star watch events. This will be a non-lab elective science class. As an elective, it can be taken during 9-12 grade.
Biology (Grade 9,10,11,12)
teacher: Mrs. Sharon Shelton
$50 material fee covers the year's materials
Science tuition $45 per month/ $405 for the year
Recommended by Apologia to have taken or be taking Algebra I during this course.
This is a high school level biology course with a laboratory taught from a Christian viewpoint. Students will work at home through the sixteen chapters of Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Biology, 3rd Ed. by Dincher.
Class time will be utilized for labs, group discussion, and clarification of concepts. Topics of study will include: the study of life; ecology; cell structure and function; DNA, proteins and the cell cycle; genetics; evolution; microscopic organisms; fungi; plants and animals. Students will be doing lab work most weeks during class time. For biology, this means a lot of microscope work, dissections and other labs to learn about various life processes or organisms.
Homework: Students will be expected to read the modules, answer “On Your Own” questions and module study guides at home, as well as complete lab worksheets.
Homework Time: 3 - 5 hours per week. This varies per student. There are a lot of terms that must be learned for biology. These include classifications, cell parts, and anatomy and physiology terms. It is wise for students to study and learn these terms throughout the week.
Grading: Chapter tests will be administered at home by parent but turned into Mrs. Shelton for grading. Mrs. Shelton will also grade lab worksheets and lab reports.
